APOLOGY TO SCHOOLS OF SANCTUARY MONAGHAN

Places of Sanctuary – and its acting chair, Andy Pollak – would like to sincerely apologise for omitting mention of three schools in County Monaghan when issuing press releases in December 2020 about two schools in Waterford and Wexford, Mount Sion Secondary School and Bunscoil Loreto in Gorey, being awarded School of Sanctuary status. The erroneous impression given by the press releases were that these schools were the first two Schools of Sanctuary in the Republic of Ireland, rather than the first two under a new Schools of Sanctuary Ireland programme.

In fact, two schools and one pre-school project in County Monaghan were the first schools to be awarded School of Sanctuary status in 2019 under a separate EU-funded border region project. Those schools were Scoil Éanna, Ballybay, Co. Monaghan; Largy College, Clones, Co. Monaghan; and Ballybay Community Creche, Ballybay, Co. Monaghan. We sincerely regret any upset caused to these schools, their students, teachers and parents, by this error.
