Wexford Sanctuary Ambassadors opened a new chapter of their eventful year on Saturday December 19th when they opened Sanctuary Space, an exhibition displaying the skills of people living in Direct Provision.
The exhibition, which featured clothing, crafts, art and jewellery created and designed during lockdown, was opened by Senator Malcolm Byrne on Saturday and visitors included Brendan Howlin TD and Councillor Andrew Bolger. Visitors were treated to a dazzling display of internationally inspired crafts as well as delicious Libyan and Georgian snacks.
The exhibition was the brainchild of Sanctuary Ambassadors Mariam Dudashvili and Rania Elamin, and supported by Michael Drea of Wexford County Council. For several weeks, with assistance from members of Wexford Sanctuary Runners, they have been painting and refurbishing the space. Mariam, whose tailoring and design skills were put to good use during lockdown when she created over 4000 reusable face masks, has been busy making a variety of high-quality crafts including handbags, tableware, clothing and bunting. Rania designed the display and used her graphic design skills to create information sheets and packs for visitors. Enas Akrish made

The exhibition is now closed but plans are afoot to reopen for a few days after Christmas and to launch all three small businesses in tailoring, graphic design, and Arabic catering.
